Multiple Housing Settlement

Mass housing, Nashik, India

Bachelors of Architecture | Mumbai University, 2015-20

Located in the newly developing region of Nashik, India,  this multiple housing settlement attempts a novel concept of housing multiple classes of society within one site.  The  housing settlement creates it's own ecosystem of classes while also giving them   their privacy and feeling of ownership.

Low Income Group Housing

The often neglected section of society not only needed community spaces but also a taste of privacy. Therefore, the lower income group has numerous internal courtyards as well as private terraces that connect structures.

Interconnected terraces with  visual access across the region reinstates the strong sense of community in the people. The levels have been restricted to a maximum of three to reduce a feeling of distance and alienation within the residents.

The central  courtyards  between the interlocking    structures  are pivotal for  social  growth of the community and house varying public activities for the residents.   Staircases leading to the upper levels from central courtyards further increase  interaction. Outdoor seating along the trees is an ode to the common seating found in rural India.

Middle Income Group Housing

The middle class in urban India craves the best of both worlds and wants equal amounts of privacy as well as community    interaction. The structure housing this class has a central podium shared among the privately owned flats to act as a social interaction catalyst.

The structures are oriented such that they create a air funnel effect with the taller building behind receiving adequate ventilation. The homes have  balconies overlooking the  greenscapes surrounding the building.

The middle income housing apartments ideally houses families of four and therefore has two bedroom homes.  The balconies have been introduced to every home to give openness   along with privacy.

High Income  Group Housing

The top tier residents on the site would not only want seclusion but also lateral space and therefore  each high income resident has a private bungalow within a gated area.  It stands separated   from  the  rest of the settlements through multiple pathways and heavy foliage thereby ensuring privacy.

The two storey structure not only has it's own private terrace but also a dining courtyard with a skylight above it to let in crisp light  while still maintaining the sanctity and privacy of the home.

The home has two levels  that stand connected physically through the staircase and interactivity through the dining courtyard.  The living area and the staircase surround the courtyard thereby giving complete visual access through this interactive space. Balconies and terraces are well guarded by heavy foliage to ensure privacy.

High / Middle Income Group Housing

The middle and high income group tower stands tallest on the site  with sixty four apartment homes. The  building has thirty two , two  bedroom  and three bedroom apartments each.  The building offers luxury as well as seclusion for the residents.

The open spaces in this high-rise  come in the form of balconies. Spacious living areas   have been designed to  provide ample  space for family interactions.

The building houses two types of apartments to attract  mixed income groups  from middle and high classes. It is a attempt to create a coexistence of both groups thereby increasing interclass social interaction.
